Destination Home
The Problem:
There are over 5,000 chronically homeless individuals in Dallas County. Consistent studies have shown that 85% of homeless individuals are able to stabilize their lives when connected with permanent housing and supportive services.
Our Unique Response:
We do not provide temporary shelter. We do not provide transitory housing. We provide permanent homes to our chronically homeless neighbors, coupled with wrap-around supportive services. Having grown out of needs recognized in the case management program at our Resource Center, Destination Home provides rent and support services to 105 chronically-homeless, disabled individuals, many of whom are veterans of U.S. military service. This aid enables our neighbors to transition out of homelessness and into self-sufficiency.
Destination Home, supported by grants through the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), provides the following:
- Each neighbor participating in Destination Home is assigned a case manager who closely monitors his or her success.
- Case managers provide services such as budgeting assistance, employment assistance if appropriate (because many of our Destination Home neighbors are disabled, most cannot work), mental health services and serve as a referral point to many other organizations in the community.
We currently have 105 participants, and that number will increase to 133 by the end of 2011.
Our Biggest Challenge:
Fighting the stigma attached to the chronically homeless by the residents of neighborhoods where Destination Home housing is offered and proposed.
Our Effectiveness:
Neighbors participating in Destination Home, through the provision of permanent housing and supportive services, stabilize their lives and develop the capacity to live independently while avoiding a return to homelessness.
